Joining Forces to Preserve the Heritage of Yahyalı Carpets
KAYSERİ – At the Tohumluk Foundation, we believe that rural development is not only an economic issue but also a cultural one. Preserving traditional crafts and ensuring that artisans can sustainably benefit from their work are essential parts of strengthening rural communities.
With this vision, on 10 September 2026, Hatice Yetişen, Director of the Yahyalı Public Education Center, together with our Kayseri Provincial Coordinator Nilüfer Bıçakcıoğlu and volunteers Hayriye Boz and Emine Kihtir, visited the Kayseri Carpet Weavers' Chamber of Tradesmen to discuss the revival of traditional carpet weaving in Yahyalı.
The meeting focused on the unique characteristics of Yahyalı carpets, including their weaving techniques, natural wool, traditional dyes, distinctive motifs, and historical significance. More importantly, discussions addressed how the women who have recently resumed carpet production can gain better access to markets and receive fair economic value for their craftsmanship.
Participants exchanged ideas on cooperation between the Yahyalı Public Education Center and the Kayseri Carpet Weavers' Chamber, exploring opportunities for promotion, marketing, and sustainable commercialization. All parties agreed that cultural heritage can only survive when it continues to be produced, appreciated, and provides value for those who keep these traditions alive.

The second stop of the day was the Melikgazi Culture and Arts Center, where the team visited the Traditional Saddlebag (Heybe) Exhibition curated by Berna Özden. The exhibition featured traditional Yahyalı saddlebags and highlighted another important aspect of the region's rich weaving heritage. During the visit, discussions with Berna and Lütfi Özden focused on preserving traditional weaving techniques and exploring future collaborations to promote Yahyalı's cultural heritage.
At the Tohumluk Foundation, we believe that cultural heritage is not something that belongs only in museums. It is a living legacy that grows stronger when it continues to be practiced, supports local communities, and is passed on to future generations.
